"The Small Cowper Madonna" is a picture of the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael, depicting Maria and the Child, in a typical Italian province. It dates back to 1505.
It is not known exactly why the "The Small Cowper Madonna" was painted. Probably it was a private order. The image of Madonna and Baby were often given as a wedding gift. It is believed that the church on the right side of the painting is the church in San Bernardino where the governors of Urbino (the birthplace of Rafaello) were buried. It is supposed that the presence of the church means that the painting could be an order from this family. On the other hand, Raphael himself may have drawn it from nostalgic feelings in his native place.
The Madonna is painted sitting in the center of the picture with a bright red dress and blond hair. On her lap there is a dark drapery on which her right hand is delicately sitting. In her left hand holds the baby Christ, who hugs her arms around her neck. He looks over his shoulder with a smile. Behind them is revealed a beautiful landscape of church and clear sky. The dome of the temple adds to the already existing atmosphere, religious divinity and grace. The Madonna has a translucent shawl around her shoulders, like a halo.
Reproduction is a high quality print on an Italian canvas with eco inks. The canvas is folded over the back to the size of 30x40, and above this size is stretched on a subframe. The picture is arranged with a luxury frame.
