The painting was created in 1770 and is now kept at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. It was donated to the museum in 1961 by Mrs. Melan Bro, in memory of her father, Andrew Mellon. Previously, this picture belonged to Dr. Tuffie.
"A Young Girl Reading (La Liseuse)" is an unknown girl in a profile holding a book in her right hand and completely absorbed in reading. Seems to be sitting by the window because the light shines in his face and shades the wall behind him. The girl is wearing a lemon-yellow dress. This beautiful warm color is emphasized by the presence of purple ribbons that decorate her chest, neck and hair. The pillow on which she leans is also in the purple color. Purple and yellow, two complementary colors emphasize each other and create a beautiful feel.
Fragonard is the last artist of the era of decadence. His genre and frivolous scenes will soon be displaced by the cruelty of the revolution, which will also leave most of his sponsors.
