Francisco José de Goya and Lucientes is a Spanish painter, graphic artist and palace artist. It is considered both for the last of the old masters and the first of the modern ones.
"The Naked Maja" is the first naked figure in natural growth in West European art. It provokes enormous indignation in Spanish society. Goya refuses to cover her with clothes, instead he draws a new one - "The Clothed Maja". In 1813, the Inquisition confiscated both paintings, and for years it is believed that the model for the sails is the mistress of Godoy Pepita Tudo or Maria Cayetana de Silva, Alba's 13th duchess.
Majo (masc.) or maja (fem.) is a term used for the lower classes of Spanish society, especially in Madrid, who were known for their lavish and interesting dresses in traditional Spanish style, manners and lustful behavior. They are among the favorite themes of several Spanish artists from the 19th century. The dress worn by the model in this painting also gives the name of the painting.
After all, the scandal with the naked woman painted by the artist continued until the twentieth century. And most of all because they had long and wrongly assumed that the painted beauty was Duchess de Alba and that Goya wanted to reveal to the world that she was his. According to art historians, the legend is obviously due to the fact that the lady has bought the artist The Naked Maja and The Clothed Maja to divert the view of the Inquisition from them.
At the time of Goya, the decree still applies, punishing with fine and exile any painter who painted naked bodies. The artists point out that this is a woman of the people, with whom the artist has not experienced any shyness. The legend tells that when the maestro accepted deba Alba in his atelier and allowed volition, he always closed the statue of the Virgin Mary del Pilar with the cover. The relationship between Francisco and the beauty gradually diminishes, but they both retain their mutual feelings of affection and respect.
